BOTOX®

SkinCare in Wellesley, MA

As one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, Botox® is widely available. However, natural-looking results require treatment from an expert. Dr. Rashel Goodkin is a Harvard-trained dermatologist with many years of experience in both medical and cosmetic dermatology. She offers effective, safe, and comfortable Botox® treatment for patients in the Boston area.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable product that uses the active ingredient botulinum toxin. Botox® has many uses, but is most widely-known for its cosmetic purposes.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® works by disrupting nerves from communicating with corresponding muscles, causing the muscles to be temporarily paralyzed. This relaxes the muscles and prevents wrinkle formation. In cosmetic use, Botox® is injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles through repetitive facial expressions. Rather than creating a “frozen” look, today’s Botox® injections soften the appearance of wrinkles and stop them from growing deeper or more pronounced as you frown, squint, scowl, or smile.

Who is a Candidate for Botox®?

Candidates for Botox® include patients who have dynamic wrinkles and fine lines in areas such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, or around the eyes. Before choosing Botox, your skin should be in good overall health. The average age of first-time Botox patients is about 35-40, but some younger patients choose the treatment to prevent wrinkles from forming. Dr. Goodkin will evaluate your skin and any fine lines or wrinkles that you are concerned about to determine whether Botox is right for you.

The Botox® Procedure

After verifying that you are a good candidate for Botox®, Dr. Goodkin will then determine the muscles that are contributing to your fine lines or wrinkles and the correct injection sites. The treatment area is then cleaned, and injections are performed. Injections are generally well-tolerated with only minor discomfort, but topical anesthetic can be applied if necessary. Botox® injections only take about ten minutes to complete.

After receiving your Botox® injections, you may see some redness or swelling in the area, which should subside quickly. You should be careful not to rub or put pressure on the area, which can negatively affect your results. Patients are also advised to stay upright for at least four hours after injections. Results become visible within about 4 days after receiving Botox® injections, and the maximum effect may take about 2 weeks to become fully apparent. The injected muscles stay relaxed for about 4 months, although this may last longer in some patients. Botox® results are temporary, but most patients choose to have maintenance injections about every four months. Dr. Goodkin will recommend a treatment plan that will yield the best Botox results for you.
