Pigmentation Disorders

Most pigmentation disorders are genetic or present at birth and cause no medical problems for the patients who face them. However, treatment is available to reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation for patients whose disorders affect their self-esteem.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo causes a lack of pigmentation as the immune system attacks melanin, resulting in white patches throughout the skin or hair.

Birthmarks

Most people have some sort of birthmark, but larger or more conspicuous birthmarks can be removed or reduced by a dermatologist.

Melasma

Melasma is a condition in which patients see patches of darkened skin, which may appear grayish brown. This most commonly occurs in those with tan or darker skin tones.
