What are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are soft growths on the skin that are composed of loose collagen fibers. Skin tags often form in the armpits, breasts, groin, eyelids, or within folds of the neck. It is thought that skin tags develop due to friction when skin rubs against skin, however, the exact cause for skin tags is largely unknown.
When to Seek Treatment for Skin Tags
Skin tags are generally not harmful. However, they can become uncomfortable depending on where they are located, as some patients find their skin tags have a tendency to catch or pull on jewelry and clothing. In addition, patients often are not happy with the appearance of skin tags and watch to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.
Skin Tag Removal
There are at-home skin tag removal treatments available, but attempting to remove a skin tag by yourself can run the risk of problems such as infection. In addition, it’s possible to misidentify a skin tag for another condition, so having a professional dermatologist examine your skin before treatment is important. If you wish to have a skin tag removed, Dr. Goodkin can use one of several techniques to do so safely. Cryotherapy, a technique that uses liquid nitrogen, can each be used to permanently remove a skin tag. Alternatively, Dr. Goodkin may use surgical scissors to simply remove the skin tag at its base. If necessary, bandages or sutures are then applied so the skin heals properly.
